'Sporting' is a much higher word than 'sports-loving'. So Firstly,
lets say they mean 'sports-loving' and lets evaluate the statement.
Yes recently the tumultuous reception given to KKR team , which would
not happen any where else, could be brandished as a proof.
'Sports-loving' would mean , in general, committed interest in sports
of all type , and sportsmen!, more than other places.
Look at a Bengal sportsMAN who has brought laurels to India and Bengal and his/her humiliation going on. Pinki Pramanik. Even Criminals have human rights and Pinki is just accused not convicted. Human Rights and Personal Dignity have been thrown to the dogs and Bengalis seem passive about it. No crowd protesting, No crowd demanding respect for human rights.... I had written earlier how I personally have felt unsafe as a Single person in Bengal especially where the volatile madness of a generally educated, creative, intellectual and 'modern' society can lynch a person on just hearsay .... with all qualities of education, creativity and Intellect going for a toss and raw animal instinct taking over! Educated Bengal just forgets simple kids Sex education that whatever crime Pinki Pramanik can be guilty of, she CAN'T be a RAPIST as a Transgender even if she wanted to!!!! Thank God, Pinky Pramanik, the small blessings you had (or not had!!!) which finally let you come out of the jail. The Important Question is : Is the reverse true? If You could rape, or rather possessed the tool(s), then if somebody accused you of rape then would you be jailed for the simple reason that you are a MAN enough??
Police, Politicians, People have already condemned and RAPED her by circulating her naked MMS and conducting her medical trial in front of male policemen. Bengal cannot be a Sports-loving state at all the way they have not been able to stop a meritorious athlete of Bengal from being talibanised.
Forget the higher word 'Sporting'.
Is Bengal really is a sports-loving state? Then Bengal (and India too) would also know how to take defeats in it's stride. Gavaskar, Kapil, Sachin and Azhar have been filthily abused at the Eden Gardens at times they have failed and That shameful incident when Pakistan / Srilanka? defeated India in a world cup match at the Eden Gardens which had to be evacuated owing to crowd trouble when it realized India was going to lose .... proves that Bengal (and India) just takes to Sports as a replacement of lack of success in general and no valid alternatives to be busy doing other commitments like working hard!!! Sports, actually only a couple of them, Football and Cricket, which act as a alternative (or a supplement!!! ) to drugs, drinks and sex... a ORGY of Idiots sitting at a crowded stadium or a get-together feeling sportsmen-like, and getting a momentary Community Orgasm together!!!!
And for the orgasm to be enjoyed, Sachin and others have to WIN always and score Centuries every time they bat. Else even the GOD of the Cricket World gets abused and advised to retire.
If Bengal is really Sports-loving then why did the crowds not dance in streets on hearing that Anand is a 5 times World Champion; that Leander is attending Olympics 6th time; that Mary Kom is a Woman World Champion in Boxing at least 3 times; that a 20- year old Girl from Jharkand is a World No. 1 in Archery currently. But they act crazy days before a fat, retired and drugged old Maradona lands in Kolkata as a nobody and not a current player.
